Annual Gervâo is a herb that can grow up to 120 cm in height. It's typical of most tropical countries, and although some consider it a weed, it is sometimes grown as an ornamental plant for its blue flowers.

Gervâo contains flavonoids, terpenes, phenols and steroids. Many elements of this grass have documented biological actions that may explain many of the indigenous uses of the plant. For example, a glycoside iridoide showed properties neuroprotettive, antiviral, antibacterial, liver protective, cardiac and anticancer effects. One of the first studies on gervâo was conducted in India in 1962 and focused on the vasodilating and antispasmodic properties of this grass. Contraindications:

Gervâo is used as herbal medicine abortive and, therefore, is contraindicated during pregnancy.
Gervâo has vasodilator properties and, therefore, can lower blood pressure. Those who suffer from low pressure or taking medication against hypertension should consult their doctor before taking this plant.
The Stachytarpheta cayennensis (but not the S. jamaicensis) naturally contains a small amount of salicylic acid, a natural phyto-chemical that is the precursor to aspirin. The use of this herb is contraindicated for allergy to aspirin.
